Compound SH, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) developed by the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) to treat HIV-positive people, has proved to be safe, effective, and inexpensive, and will be put into the market later this year. This was announced at a recent news briefing jointly held by the CAS Kunming Branch and the S&T Department of Yunnan Province.

    In cooperation with the Thai Ministry of Public Health, KIB phytochemist Luo Shide and his team have been conducting research into drugs that can hold cure for the epidemic by making use of rich herbal resources in southwest China's Yunnan Province. At present, the compound SH has completed three stages of clinical trials in Thailand with exciting results.

    Since 1985, Luo and his colleagues have been questing ways in Chinese herbal medicine for treating AIDS. After sifting though over 1,000 medicinal herbs, they selected the bark of white mulberry root and four other Chinese plants. By combining traditional medicine and modern pharmacology, Luo developed SH Compound according to principles for mixing up the Chinese herbal medicines.

    The initial success of the research efforts by Prof. Luo received attention from the Thai government in 1990. With the active support from Thai Deputy Prime Minister Korn Dabbaransi, KIB singed an agreement with Thai medical authorities to jointly conduct clinical trials of SH Compound in Thailand.

    The first two such experiments were completed by 2001, in which SH was tested on 28 patients in Thailand. Nine of them showed obvious reductions in viral concentration, while 16 others showed no increase after three months treatment. The Thai Ministry of Health confirmed an effectiveness ratio of 89 percent.

    The third clinical trial was completed in Thailand in June 2003. A report provided by Deputy Minister of Public Health of Thailand indicates that the medicine could effectively destroy AIDS virus, remarkably reduce HIV virus carried in patients, promote T-4 cell viability and improve people's immune system.

    The experiment has further proved that the compound is not only safe and effective, but also without any side-effect harmful to patients as displayed in western medications of the same kind. Besides, its price is only about one tenth that of the western medicines. As developing countries struggle with the high cost of Western medicines, the discovery offers hope of more affordable cures.

    The success with the medicine is the result of S&T cooperation between Chinese and Thai governments, demonstrating that the two governments attach great importance to the prevention and control of the AIDS disease by supporting pharmaceutical research and innovation. In addition, it shows that TCM has a very important role to play in treating AIDS.
